이번 회에는 저희 책 Advanced Vocab에서 소개한 중상급 영단어들을 알려드립니다. 단어의 우리말 뜻을 기억하는 데에 그치지 않고, 난이도 있는 단어를 실제로 활용하는 단계까지 나아가 보기 바랍니다.

〈특이함, 고유함〉

1. idiosyncratic [ìdiousiŋkrǽtik] 특이한

idio(‘개인 고유의 표현’이라는 뜻에서 유래한 idiom과 같은 어원으로 one’s own을 의미함)+syn (together)+crasy(mix의 뜻)로 구성된 단어다. ‘개인만이 간직한 특성’이라는 의미에서 유래하여, 개인만의 독특함을 표현한다.

The woman’s idiosyncratic mannerisms included several nervous facial ticks and a tendency to tilt her head when she spoke.

그 여성의 특이한 버릇 중에는 긴장한 듯 얼굴을 몇 번 찡그리거나 말할 때 머리를 젖히는 것도 있었다.

● 새 영화는 세상에 대한 감독의 독특한 시각을 보여준다.

The director’s new movie represents his idiosyncratic view of the world.

2. indigenous [indídʒənəs] 토착인

indi(in)+genous(낳는다는 뜻을 지닌 gen이 어원)로 구성된 단어다. ‘특정한 곳 안에서 태어났다’는 어원에서 유래하여, ‘특정 지역 고유의’, ‘토착의’라는 뜻을 지닌다.

The introduction of non-native species into an ecosystem may precipitate the extinction of indigenous animals.

생태계에 외래종이 침투하면 토착 동물의 멸종이 빨라질 수 있다.

● 고고학자들이 그 지역 토착민들의 전통을 밝히기 위해 노력하고 있다.

Archaeologists are seeking to uncover the heritage of the indigenous people of the land.

3. outlandish [àutlǽndiʃ] 이상한, 특이한

out+land+ish로 구성된 단어로 다른(out) 나라(land)에서 온 것 같다(-ish)는 의미가 담겨 있다. 이상하고 받아들이기 힘든 것을 표현할 때 쓴다.

The company’s outlandish claim that its newest product could cure cancer, obesity, insomnia, and male pattern baldness got the attention of several consumer advocacy groups.

그 기업은 새 상품이 암, 비만, 불면증, 남성 탈모를 치료할 수 있다는 이상한 주장을 해 몇몇 소비자 단체가 주시하게 되었다.

● 그녀는 무대에서 지금까지 본 적이 없는 특이한 스타일을 보여주었다.

She showed the most outlandish style to date on stage.

4. uncanny [ʌ̀nkǽni] 이상한, 기괴한

un(not)+canny(can과 같은 어원으로 clever의 의미)로 구성된 단어이며, 이상하고 기이한 것을 일컫는다.

Fezek has an uncanny ability to correctly pick the outcome of various sporting events.

페제크는 다양한 스포츠 경기의 결과를 정확하게 맞히는 기이한 능력이 있다.

● 그는 돌아가신 우리 삼촌을 묘하게 닮았다.

He bears an uncanny resemblance to my dead uncle.

5. wacky [wǽki] 별난, 이상한

‘괴짜 같다’는 뜻을 지닌 비격식적인(informal) 단어다. 속어로 ‘이상한 사람’을 wacko라고 한다.

The clown's wacky antics included throwing a bucket of confetti on the audience members and squirting water out of a rubber flower on his shirt.

그 광대의 특이한 익살 중에는 관객들에게 색종이를 뿌리거나 고무로 만든 꽃에서 물이 나와 셔츠를 젖게 만드는 것 등이 포함되어 있다.

● 그의 블로그에는 ‘다 쓴 휴대폰 재활용하는 10가지 재미난 방법’이란 글이 있다.

His blog has an article titled “10 wacky ideas to recycle old cell phones.”

〈어려움, 쉬움, 실패, 도움〉

1. awry [ərái] 뒤틀린, 잘못된

a+wry(고통으로 온몸을 비튼다는 뜻인 writhe와 어원이 같은 단어로 twist의 뜻을 지님)로 구성된 단어다. 주로 go awry의 형태로 쓰여, 일이 계획과 달리 틀어져서 잘못되는 것을 표현한다.

They were very much in love and then something had gone awry between them, leading to the inevitable breakup.

그들은 서로 많이 사랑했으나 둘 간에 뭔가 틀어지더니 결국 헤어질 수밖에 없었다.

● 거래가 잘못되어 그 회사는 수백만 달러를 잃었다.

The deal went awry, and the company would lose millions of dollars.

2. boon [búːn] 혜택, 유용한 것

benefit과 비슷하게 도움이나 혜택이 되는 것을 일컫는다. 예를 들어 boon to the economy는 ‘경제에 도움이 되는 것’이라는 뜻이다.

The hiring of Coach Johnson has been a boon to the Dragons’ chances for a championship this season.

존슨 코치를 고용한 것은 이번 시즌에 드래곤즈가 챔피언십에 진출할 가능성을 높이는 데 큰 도움이 되었다.

● 휴대용 기기 기술의 개발은 세계 경제에 큰 혜택이 되었다.

The advent of handheld technology has been a boon to the global economy.
